Whether you’re a fan of timeless musicals like The Sound of Music or prefer recent blockbusters like the mega-hit Hamilton, the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association has something for you to love about its next program, A Broadway Spectacular.
Featuring the Gorge Sinfonietta and Voci Choir, the concerts will include instrumental or choral selections from favorites by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Bernstein’s timeless West Side Story, Hamilton, Carole King’s jukebox musical, Beautiful, and much much more.
Artistic director and conductor Mark Steighner says that the program is bursting with familiar melodies and beloved music. For last year’s Musical Movie Night, the orchestra got into the spirit of the evening by dressing up in their favorite movie superhero and Disney movie costumes and have promised to once again dress as their favorite musical theatre characters. The audience is invited to get in on the fun, and whether they arrive dressed as Annie or Jean Valjean, they’re sure to have a good time. And there’s even more fun for the audience planned, with lyrics provided for a Sound of Music Sing-a-Long and an onstage “Name that Broadway Tune,” with the opportunity for selected audience members to guess song titles and win a free dinner! Audience members may sign up to compete when they arrive for the concert, and the Name That Broadway Tune event will be limited to four contestants each performance.
Once again this year, the orchestra has opened up its final rehearsal for students and children in school music programs. Music educators may arrange to bring their students for a very low cost on Tuesday, October 16 at 7 PM.
The concerts themselves are Friday, October 19 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, October 21 at 2 PM at the Wy’east Middle School PAC.
The Broadway Spectacular is just the first of an exciting season of concerts for the orchestra and choir. Information about the entire season -- and tickets for all events -- can be found at gorgeorchestra.org.
