"Calvin Tibbets: Oregon's First Pioneer"
On Friday, February 15, the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum welcomes Jerry Sutherland, author of “Calvin Tibbets: Oregon’s First Pioneer”. Sutherland will make the case why Tibbets should be considered Oregon’s First Pioneer. He will share this innocuous but ubiquitous fellow’s many adventures with fans of early Oregon history.

THE DALLES — in 1832, Great Britain had virtual control of Oregon through its Hudson’s Bay Company. Fort Vancouver controlled the Willamette River and central Columbia River region, while Fort George (Astoria) controlled the mouth of the Columbia and coast line. Americans there before a man named Calvin Tibbets, had been explorers, fur trappers, scientists, trading sailors, and other businessmen. Tibbet’s goal was different. He believed that building a permanent colony of Americans was the best way to secure Oregon for American.

Dinner plus the program ($16) is at 6 pm. The menu is savory pork tenderloin, cheddar garlic mashed potatoes, mandarin salad, bread and dessert. Beer and wine are available for purchase. The program only ($5) starts at 7 pm.
