“Calvin Tibbets: Oregon’s First Pioneer” Presented by Author Jerry Sutherland

THE DALLES — in 1832, Great Britain had virtual control of Oregon through its Hudson’s Bay Company. Fort Vancouver controlled the Willamette River and central Columbia River region, while Fort George (Astoria) controlled the mouth of the Columbia and coast line. Americans there before a man named Calvin Tibbets, had been explorers, fur trappers, scientists, trading sailors, and other businessmen. Tibbet’s goal was different. He believed that building a permanent colony of Americans was the best way to secure Oregon for American.
